My name is Kay Ismond and I am one of the Kindergarten teachers at Concord Academy Petoskey. I am a 1991 graduate from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education (Grades K-8). I have two minors in Mathematics and Science. I also have a background in instrumental music from E.M.U. In my Kindergarten class I integrate lots of music into my curriculum when teaching the days of the week, the months of the year, counting skills, the alphabet, seasons, holidays, etc…
In my nineteen years of teaching, I have spent fourteen of those years in the Kindergarten classroom. It’s such an amazing, but yet rewarding, experience to watch the little ones grow and develop both socially and academically. With a smaller class size at Concord Academy, I have the opportunity to meet individual needs. Outside of Kindergarten, I have taught 5th and 6th grade math, 7th grade, a 1st & 2nd grade multiage class, and a 2nd & 3rd grade multiage class.
On a personal note, I am involved in an instrumental music program in my church. I play the flute on the worship team. I am also a volunteer for Hospice of Little Traverse Bay. As part of my volunteer experience, I work with the K-2 teachers and their students from our school to create artwork for the Hiland Cottage (Hospice Hospital). Each month of the school year a different classroom is represented. It has been a very positive community project for the Concord students and the Hospice Organization. This experience has given our students the opportunity to reach out and give to others in our community.
I am a mother of three children. All of my children have benefited from time spent as Concord students. My oldest son, Nathaniel, is currently a sophomore at Oakland University. He is studying Political Science. My second oldest son, Jonathan, is currently a junior at Petoskey High School. He is very involved with the Youth Advisory Committee, National Honor’s Society, and he helps with the JV and Varsity Basketball Teams. Sarah is my youngest child. She is currently an eighth grader here at Concord. She is also very active in competitive gymnastics. My husband, Tim, is an Internal Medicine Physician, and he is very involved with the Up North Big Band and the church worship team as well.
What I enjoy most about working at Concord Academy is the collaboration I have with the teachers on staff. Everyone works well together in making our arts integration program so successful.
